How to make Super Mario fireballs (cheese balls)

Step 1. For those who love cheese, a wonderful snack – cheese balls on a skillet. Prepare all the necessary ingredients. Hard cheese is the main ingredient of this dish. So choose a quality and tasty product. Put the cheese in the refrigerator an hour before cooking so that it is easier to grate with a grater. Choose odorless vegetable oil.

Step 2. Before starting to make cheese balls, cool the hard cheese so that it does not melt and it is easier to grind. Grate the cheese on a large grater. It’s easier to work with dough that has larger cheese pieces.

Step 3. Take a deep bowl for kneading the dough so that it is convenient to mix all the ingredients. Beat the egg with a fork in it. It’s not necessary to beat until foam appears.

Step 4. Add the grated hard cheese to the eggs. Salt a little. If the cheese is too salty, you can skip adding salt to the dough. Mix everything.

Step 5. Add 3 tablespoons of flour to the cheese and egg mixture. The consistency of the dough depends on all the ingredients, products from different manufacturers have different properties. Therefore, add flour in small portions. If the dough is too liquid, and you don’t have to apply force when stirring, add more flour.

Step 6. From the received dough, form balls the size of a quail egg. You can make them larger, but then you will need to use more vegetable oil. The dough is quite sticky, especially since the cheese starts melting in warm hands. To make it easier to work with the dough, try forming the balls with your fingertips. When a lot of dough sticks to your hands, wash and dry them, then continue shaping. I ended up with 16 cheese balls.

Step 7. Take a round, wide dish with a flat bottom. Sprinkle the bottom with bread crumbs. Place the formed balls on the dish and roll them on all sides in the bread crumbs. To do this, turn and tilt the dish so the balls roll on the bottom and are evenly coated in bread crumbs. Instead of bread crumbs, you can use flour, but bread crumbs make the coating more crispy. Take a skillet with high sides and a diameter of about 20 cm.

Step 8. No matter what skillet you use, pour in enough oil so the balls are halfway submerged. Heat the oil over medium heat, as working with hot oil is dangerous and can cause burns. To prevent the oil from splattering, you can add a pinch of salt, which will absorb any moisture that may be present. Check the oil temperature by dropping a couple of bread crumbs into it. It should sizzle. Carefully place the balls into the oil.

Step 9. Move them around with a spoon or spatula to ensure even cooking and prevent them from sticking to the bottom of the skillet. If you see that the balls are browning too quickly, lower the heat. This will make it easier to handle the hot balls so that some do not burn while you are removing others. Fry until golden brown, then flip to the other side. It took me about 2 minutes per side. The cooking time depends on many factors, including the bread crumbs, oil, and stove.

Step 10. Once the cheese balls are well browned on all sides, remove them from the skillet and place them on paper towels to absorb any excess oil. To prevent the balls from losing their round shape, do not pile them up after cooking, as they are soft and can flatten each other.
