The drink first appeared in Sweden and Finland during the late Middle Ages, when cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and orange peel began to be added to the wine. In the XVI-XVII centuries wine with honey and spices was warmed up and served as a warming drink during the cold winter time. The drink’s original name was “hippokras”, and later the name “glög” was given to it in Sweden at the end of the XVIII century. Now glögg is a traditional Scandinavian mulled wine for parties and winter meetings with friends.
